Comox Valley Sustainability Strategy

The Comox Valley Sustainability Strategy project will create an overarching Sustainability Strategy for four local governments in the Comox Valley (Comox Valley Regional District, Village of Cumberland, Town of Comox, and City of Courtenay).

The Sustainability Strategy will be a non-regulatory document whose scope covers many aspects of a community. It will provide a reference point and direction for updates of regulatory documents such as Official Community Plans, Local Area Plans, transportation plans, parks plans & others. It will also serve as a reference point for development proposals where appropriate.

A strong emphasis in this project is on ensuring that a diverse set of citizens have a say in how the Comox Valley will meet upcoming challenges, including issues such as social well-being, sense of place, economic development, climate change and food security. So far, we have involvement by four local governments, the public, youth, community organizations, businesses, and the development community.

Firm Role

HB Lanarc serves as the lead consultant for the sustainability strategy project. HB Lanarc carried out background research on Comox Valley issues, developed and managed an extensive community consultation plan, and will co-create the strategy with local government staff. Services include: community open houses; workshops for the public, developers and staff; website development; a youth engagement component; implementation planning; and development of the final plan.
